“Well, I couldn’t really say how he’s ‘doing’… I mean, I’ve known him from way back and he used to be quite different from what he is now. He’s more… how should I put it… ‘human’, than he was back then. And still there are a lot of times when I can’t figure out what’s going on in his head.”

“Well, I have the habit of not focusing just on the story but I always try to find out what the author tried to relay to the reader. Still I think that the soul actually determines one’s actions. Let’s take for example an extreme case: If you had lived Hitler’s life from the start, would you have ended up doing what he did? Or why do you think that two different human beings, when exposed to the same exact circumstances react differently? In my opinion, this is a clear show of the human’s soul.”

…I do know a little about his background. H-he told me one story or two. He’s a fascinating person, really. I-i mean, I’ve only known him for a short a-and I can’t say that I’m aware of how human he actually is…It’s not like people similar to him are easily read, not matter how hard others wish.

The story is just as important. You have to depend on it to relay the message properly, otherwise it’ll just be another bad book. Not the soul. The mind and personality, which is comes from genetics and how one was raised. Hitler and I have greatly different personalities. I’m a shy, quiet bookworm. He’s…a little bit touched in the head, to say it politely. Most people would react similarly in the same circumstances. It’s the special, amazing people who react completely different. The soul is a concept and has an unclear definition. You can’t say what it is nor what it is not.

Akune was impressed that she had met Kumagawa and seemed okay. Perhaps he had been becoming a bit of a better human already?

“Ah yes, we’re actually from the same student council.”

“And well, it’s true that some stories get ‘adapted’ when translated and sometimes lose part of it’s original impression. And don’t worry, even though I understand your standpoint, I still found the story to be deep since in my opinion, the author attempted to let the readers know with perhaps confusing means, how every little action that humans do reflect how their soul is on the inside.”

“As for the mangas, that’s a side hobby of mine, I also like to analyze the stories and I’ve seen that there are some good stories even on mangas sometimes.”

…Oh. Um…How is he doing?

No…I just feel that Pride and Prejudice was lacking, and that the translations were inadequate. Actually, the story was only served to confuse me about the ‘soul’, which is an concept most likely not reflected by actions. Reason, creed and the way someone is brought up most likely determines the actions they take, not something like the soul. The author should have written an essay rather than a novel, really. O-of course, that’s my opinion. I’m sure you saw an underlying theme that I did not.

…I’ve read The Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, as well Liar Game. Those are the only manga I’ve really read. I apologize again, I’m not nearly as well-versed in manga as I am in standard literature, but I’m it is just as good as novels an such.

/Ah, that gate, he and his legs really appreciated it as he leaned against it, catching his breath as he rested a bit after Shiori had let go of him. His head was killing him at this point along with his legs, and he simply allowed his head to bow, waving his okay when Shiori had spoken up, hearing her rush back into the building at a much faster pace than what they had been going while she had been supporting him.

/Attempting to fix his appearance so that he wouldn’t look like a complete mess when Shiori’s parents arrived out of appearance, he wondered…what exactly should he say? Exchanging pleasantries would just be a little strange all things considered, but he wasn’t say…bleeding or anything - though would dallying make his case worse? He had no idea… - so they didn’t have to rush him to the hospital (maybe). Hopefully though their questions were light and soft, he didn’t think his head would be able to take a lot of them otherwise.

/A little of the pain in his legs were gone, thankfully, and he looked over when he heard Shiori’s fast pace coming towards him. He was about to scoot over or something so that she could rest as well, when he heard the sound of a car coming near. Switching his gaze over to the direction of that sound, he noticed that it was a pretty nice looking car.

She was out of breath. Running around, and having some underclassman a head taller than her lean on her was tiring. She heard the sound of a car pulling up. Mother…Father…They were finally here. Small miracles, small miracles. She used the lasts of her energy to sprint out of campus. She closed the gate behind her and locked it. Her parents got out of the car. She wondered if the boy was intimidated by them because they were wearing their clothing for work.

…Father, Mother. This is a…friend…of mine. Shima Renzou-san. Shima-kun, this is my mother, Shiomiya Shizuko, and my father, Shiomiya Satoru.

They both bowed. Something bad was coming…She could feel it. Her father made no comment about her newly found strength nor did her mother do anything out-of-line and audacious. 3…2…1…

Hello! Pleased to meet you, Shima-san. I hope you’ve been taking care of Shiori. She can get out of hand for a girl her age.

He chuckled! What was so funny about her?! Yes, she was teenager, but she was hardly any fun to be around!

But…May I ask what happened?

Satoru, don’t bother the poor kid now. Do it when he gets better, please.

Her mother smiled enigmatically. Dragging her over, Mother knocked foreheads with her. And pushed her into the car, without warning. She muttered some words about her mother being too rough for a Yamato Nadeshiko. But Nadeshiko was a wild flower. She rubbed her forehead.

Please, ignore my wife. She’s a little…eccentric, for the lack of a better word. Actually, she isn’t normally like this. I think something’s been bothering her, but don’t let us intimidate you. We’re normal, by most standards.

Sa~toh~ru~! Please, just pick up the boy. The faster, the better.

She saw (out the one-way window) that her father picked her the boy and place him gently (unlike her mother) next to her. She blinked a little while her parents got back into the car. What a day…

Akune took a deep breath before talking.

“I’m from Hakoniwa Academy and I’ve read a lot of books. From the popular bestseller ‘Pride and Prejudice’ to the mostly unknwon ‘Mirror of the soul’ which I must say I found to be a relly deep story. I’ve also read popular manga and comic books too.”

…Hakoniwa? Like Kumagawa-kun?

Pride and Prejudice was okay…I liked the original English better than any of the translations. Mirror of the Soul…You have interesting taste. I-i don’t mean to be rude, of course. That novel was a little…I-i think it wasted a perfectly good plot. I apologize. I don’t really read that much manga, myself. I’ve read maybe only a couple JUMP! issues, and maybe finished one or two seinen series.

“Oh? Well, even though I don’t look much like it, I’m the Secretary of the student council from my school as well and I like reading as well.”

She tilted her head. That arm band was kinda…familiar, dare she say?

…Ah…secretary as well? May I ask for what school? What books do you like?

“Shiori-san is that right? I see you’re holding a book so I take it you like reading?”

…That is fine. Yes, I love books and I’m a member of the Eloquent Library Committee at my school. That means I’m a librarian, really.
